Cabbage, Broccoli, Etc.
Also known as cole crops
Broccoli is makes a great snack eaten raw, a steamed side dish, or added into soups or stir fry.
Availability: Occasional depending on weather during late spring and summer, Regularly available during fall through October
Storage recommendations: Keeps best refrigerated, either as a whole head or with the 'branches' cut off the stem and put in a container. Flavor is best within a week, but will keep well for up to two weeks if kept humid but not wet.
Cauliflower has a mild nutty flavor with sweet tones that intensify in late fall as the plant develops sugars to protect against the cold. It makes a good snack when eaten raw and is particularly good roasted alongside other fall favorites like potatoes, carrots, and brussels sprouts. We typically offer white cauliflower and purple cauliflower.

We typically offer green, red, and savoy cabbage. Green and red have similar flavor with sweet earthy tones and a hint of bitterness, while savoy is stronger in flavor and has crinkled leaves that give it a lighter texture. Cabbage will have better flavor in the fall as the plants produce sugars to protect them from the cold, resulting in a more mild and sweet flavored cabbage.
Availability: Regular, June-December
Storage recommendations: Summer cabbage will easily keep for two weeks, and Fall cabbage can keep for months. Cabbage should be kept in the refrigerator. The outer leaves may deteriorate slightly in storage and should be peeled off before use.
Kohlrabi are somewhat like cabbage, but in solid form and with more sweetness and less bitter tones. The smooth, crisp texture and mild flavor make them a great, crunchy snack. We like to peel them, slice them like fries, and keep in a airtight container in the refrigerator as a healthy side for meals. We often offer a variety known as Kossak, which can reach the size of a soccer ball and still remain tender, but most kohlrabi are best eaten at the size of a baseball or less.
Availability: Regular, May-November
Storage recommendations: Kohlrabi keep well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Brussels sprouts have a sweet, earthy, and nutty flavor. We only offer brussels sprouts after they have experienced freezing temperatures. Prior to freezing, the plants have not yet produced many sugars, so the sprouts will be bitter. The more cold the plants experience the sweeter and more flavorful the sprouts will become. Break the sprouts off the stem and cook with your favorite fall vegetables. We particularly like roasting them to caramelize the outer leaves and make their sweetness shine!
Availability: Available in the weeks following the first hard freeze (typically October to November)
Storage recommendations: Brussels sprouts can keep in the refrigerator for two to three weeks, but have better flavor when used as soon as possible.
